We don't mean to brag or anything...
Some of our Yakety Yak artists are up in Edinburgh, and they are all making quite the impression! From side-splitting comedy to heart-breaking drama, our artists really do it all. We’ve put all the reviews in one place to make life easier, and so you have a go-to guide if you’re heading up to the famous festival!
First up, we have ‘Edinburgh’s favourite’ comedian, Terry Alderton! Terry brings his new show ‘Bingo Bango’ to the fringe, and people are LOVING it, so much so that it is being described as ‘A blistering new show that captures the true spirit of the Fringe.’… what an accolade! The only complaint we’ve seen so far is that the venue isn’t big enough, which probably tells you all you need to know. Terry is known for being an award-winning and unpredictable comedian, but I think what we can predict from the reviews is that the tickets are going to sell out very soon, so make sure you grab them now so you don’t miss out on ‘an hour of stand-up comedy and chaos from one of the best in the business’!. Bingo Bango runs until 25th August 2019.
Next, we’ll take you down a different arm of the amazing festival with Jessica Temple and the rest of the brilliant cast in ‘Who Cares’. This heart-wrenching drama looks at the ‘traumatic, trouble-filled live[s] of young carers’, where the three actors play three Salford youths who relay their scarring stories to the audience. There are a lot of pretty heavy topics such as abuse, suicide and depression, and coupled with very little narrative to distract from this, the play is a very emotive piece of documentary theatre. ‘Who Cares’ runs until the 25th August 2019.
Next, probably one of the best-known shows at the Fringe this year, Jan Ravens and the rest of the team are performing ‘Dead Ringers: Live’. On its Edinburgh debut, the legendary BBC Radio 4 series features a mixture of classical sketches, new material and the topical humour which has won Dead Ringers critical acclaim over its nearly 20-year history. The show is being describes as ‘Gorgeously funny’, and ‘A thoroughly entertaining production, packs satirical political punch and will leave you awestuck at the sheer versatility of the team’. ‘Dead Ringers’ runs until the 13th August 2019.
Next we have our Phil Cornwell and his brand-new show ‘Alackadaddy’, ‘One of the UK’s best impressionists’, he and his voice has appeared in many cult classics over the years, including Dead Ringers, Stellar Street, and (most famously) Murdoc in the Gorillaz! This show takes a slightly different direction however, as Phil has created his own character ‘Robert Lemon Alackadaddy’. The character is an amalgamation of his own experiences and those of people he has met over the years, and although his madcap style of comedy isn’t for everyone, he is back to his best! The show is running until the 24th August 2019.
And last, but certainly not least, we have our brilliant Annabelle Baldwin in a two-woman show ‘Wild Swimming’, ‘an anachronistic romp tacking history, gender, politics and art’. Annabel, who plays Oscar, and her co-star Alice Lamb, who plays Nell meet on a Dorset beach over 400 years, and discuss what is going on in that time, but all in a modern tongue as they bicker about privilege, and things that create distance between them as man and woman. It’s fast paced and slightly manic, but if the reviews are anything to go by, this confident use of theatre only makes the experience better. The show runs until 26th August 2019.
